Allowing space after you ask a question invites the patient to process what’s been said and to share what truly matters to them. Intentional silence communicates that you are listening, patient, and nonjudgmental, giving the patient time to articulate fears, preferences, or lingering questions without feeling rushed. This helps you uncover concerns the patient may not voice right away and supports a more patient-centered conversation.

Filling the space with medical jargon can overwhelm or shut down the patient, making it harder for them to respond honestly. Leaving the patient completely silent and unresponsive leaves them uncertain about whether you are engaged or what comes next. A quick reassuring statement, while comforting in the moment, can close down exploration and prevent you from understanding the patient’s deeper concerns.

So, after you pose a question, pause briefly and await the patient’s response, using the moment to listen and pick up nonverbal cues as well. This approach centers the patient’s voice, fosters trust, and guides the discussion toward what matters most to them.
